what IS that?!

So, I need some help. While I was finishing my walk on this overcasty, springy day I came across this tree.
It didn’t look that extraordinary until I noticed the pinecone-esque things that didn’t really look like pine cones. Because they weren’t pine cones. I had no idea what they were. I left the trail to get a closer look.
What the heck is that?! Of course, I had to touch it, which totally repulsed me. Think cold, gelatinous, slime encased in a water weenie about to burst. Disgusting. But, fascinating.

I've never see them before.

I find them quite strange.

Here's another one that seems to be earlier in whatever this cycle is.Little help here?

LOL....I believe it is called a Ginko or a Taxus? something like that. Google evergreen + gelatinous and you will get something like it. Part of the conifer that is not conifer family. Ofcourse. :o)

See you soon!

Also, I hadn't looked at your bog for quite a while. I enjoyed reading it, particularly the part about being masters of the universe. :)

Abby,
You're totally right! I did a little more investigating and it's cedar apple rust. Ding ding ding, you are the winner.

I hope the trees will be okay...
